Exercise Your Way to Better Health With an Elliptical Trainer

Updated on December 29, 2007

Looking for a way to lose weight and get in better shape? As most of us realize, the only way to accomplish these goals is to start and stick with a regular exercise program, and pair it with a healthy diet. If you're looking for a great way to get off on the right foot with a new exercise program, consider incorporating an elliptical trainer into your exercise plans.

Whether you plan to work out in a gym or at home, using an elliptical trainer can be a great way to improve your overall cardiovascular health, boost your metabolism, and burn excess calories. Proper elliptical workouts provide terrific total body workouts with minimal joint impact.

Home Equipment or Fitness Center?

If you're considering purchasing exercise equipment to use at home, an elliptical trainer may be the perfect choice for you (assuming that you're actually going to use it). Be sure to try out several models when shopping for your own equipment. There can be significant variability in the feel of a workout from one trainer to another.

One of the biggest benefits of a home elliptical is the fact that they don't take up a great deal of space. They aren't tiny, but they aren't as large as many weight systems or treadmills. Good elliptical trainers are fairly quiet to operate, which means you won't wake or disturb everyone in your house when you are using the apparatus.

I have a Pro Form elliptical at home, and the gym at my office has a Champion machine, and the two trainers feel completely different. The one at work makes me feel more like I'm on a stair climber, and the one at home feels more like a running experience. I like both of them, but they are in fact very different. If I had only tried one of the two, and then purchased the other for myself, I would have been really surprised by the difference.

Most fitness centers have several elliptical trainers that members can use, so it's easy to incorporate this piece of equipment into your gym routine. They tend to be among the most popular pieces of cardiovascular equipment, so be sure to time your gym visits when you're going to be likely to have access to your favorite type of elliptical.

Make Progress Toward Your Goal

If you want to get in shape, it's important to find an exercise program that you will enjoy and stick with. If you've never tried working out on an elliptical before, it's a good idea to one out. Exercising on an elliptical can be fun, and it's a great way to burn off calories while taking a little time out of your busy schedule for yourself.
