Greek Fest Mobile, AL

The Greek Orthodox Church in my community (Mobile, AL) holds a three day GreekFest each year in November. It is one of the most anticipated and widely attended cultural festivals in the area. The event is crowded throughout the days and evenings that it is open, and many people (including me and my husband) usually go more than once during the three days the event is open to the public.

Events Include:

  • The Agora - Greek marketplace
  • The Kafenion - Greek coffee shop
  • Music
  • Dancing
  • Carnival for Kids

Food is the Star of the Event

The events are great, but the food is the real star of Greek Fest Mobile.

Meats, Sandwiches and Side Dishes Include:

  • Grecian Chicken: Greek seasoned roast chicken
  • Dolmathes: seasoned meat and rice stuffed in grape leaves
  • Grecian String Beans: delicious green beans seasoned with Greek spices, onions, and tomatoes
  • Greek Salad: traditional greek salad featuring lettuce, onions, black olives, feta, and more
  • Gyros: seasoned beef and lamb wrapped in a fresh pita with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Tzatziki sauce.
  • Kalamari: deep fried squid
  • Lamb: whole Greek-seasoned lamb slowly cooked on a charcoal spit
  • Loukanika: Greek sausage seasoned with onions on a bun.
  • Pastichio: layers of macaroni, grated cheese, and ground beef, covered with a rich cream sauce and baked
  • Souvlaki: grilled pork tenderloin on warm pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Tzatziki sauce.
  • Spanakopita: Pronounced (Span-ah-ko-pee-ta): Scrumptious "spinach pie", consisting of layers of buttered filo dough stuffed with spinach and feta cheese

Greek Salad

Sweet Selections Include:

  • Almond Cookie
  • Baklava
  • Koulourakia
  • Kourambiedes
  • Loukoumades (Greek doughnuts)

I'm from Kalamazoo, MI. I attend the Greek Festivals held in the downtown area of Kalamazoo, every year. I try not to miss any. It's sponsored by one of the Greek restaurants in Kalamazoo. I'm familiar with the Greek foods mentioned in this article not just because I have attended the Greek festivals, but being Greek myself, we had Greek cooking all the time when I was growing up. Thank you so much for sharing such a special article, and for giving some exposure to the Greek culture.

I've been part of some Greek festivals on board ship. Orthodox as they are, some traditions are interlinked with other cultures, too.
