If you're looking for a great vacation spot in the Deep South of the United States, consider a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Known by many as "The Big Easy" and "NOLA", this city has a unique charm that you won't find anywhere else.

New Orleans Activities

Whether you're planning to travel alone, with your spouse or partner, with your family, or with a group of friends, you're sure to find plenty to do in New Orleans. There are all kinds of activities in the city, including great shopping, family friendly tourist attractions, historical tours, and of course, the unique destination known as Bourbon Street.

Popular activities and places to visit include:

  • Aquarium of the Americas
  • Audubon Zoo
  • D-Day Museum
  • French Quarter
  • Harrah's Casino
  • Haunted History Tours
  • Imax Theater
  • Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve
  • Magazine Street antique shopping
  • Mardi Gras World Museum
  • Steamboat Natchez
  • Swamp Tours
  • Many additional options

New Orleans Accommodations

There are plenty of places to stay in New Orleans, in the French Quarter as well as near the airport, in nearby Metairie, and many other locations. You'll find everything from nationally owned chain properties to boutique hotels, bed and breakfast facilities, and motel accommodations. There are even a few campgrounds located in and around the city. My personal favorites are the Chateau Bourbon (a Wyndham Property) and the Hotel Monteleone, both in the French Quarter.

NOLA Dining Suggestions

If you love southern and Cajun cuisine, you'll be absolutely amazed by the food in New Orleans. There are so many great restaurants throughout the city that you'll probably need to visit several times to even make a dent in all the places you want to eat. Whether you're looking for the highest quality fine dining or if you are hoping to find a few great local "dives", you won't be disappointed when you visit NOLA.

No trip to The Big Easy is complete without a seafood meal (or several) My favorite place for seafood is Deanie's in the French Quarter. It's on the edge of the French quarter, just a few blocks from Canal Street and a few doors down from the Chateau Bourbon hotel. Among many delicious menu choices, Deanie's has terrific shrimp po boys, outstanding gumbo, and the best crawfish dishes that you'll find anywhere.

You also have to try a muffuletta sandwich while you're in New Orleans. Central Grocery has terrific muffulettas. Go for lunch or an afternoon snack; the store is not open during evening hours. Pierre Maspero also has great muffulettas. This restaurant's menu also features delicious Jambalaya, and fried seafood entrees. Be prepared to stand in line (it's worth it) and be prepared to pay cash (credit cards are not accepted, prices are very affordable).

Great hub but unfortunately this is the commerialized prepackaged version of new orleans cultural experience-the french quarters? Bourbon street? Most natives only go there if we working there. Nothing but novelty shops, smell of stale beer and urine, drunken visitors, nude people performing seedy acts at night. Oh how I wish that Noir New Orleans culture (which truly make this great city) was brought more to the highlight in these city tours. New Orleans is so much more.
