Unique Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Updated on November 24, 2007

Macaroni is one of the most popular side dishes in America, for both every day meals and special occasions. There are several different ways to prepare macaroni and cheese, most of which use yellow cheddar or American cheese.

The first thing you'll notice about this unique macaroni and cheese recipe is that it looks and tastes completely different from traditional casseroles. For starters, it's white instead of yellow. That's because this recipe uses a combination of Swiss cheese and parmesan cheese. It's a unique twist on an old favorite that you and your family are sure to love.

Macaroni with Swiss and Parmesan Cheese Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces of elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Paprika to taste

Directions:

Prepare the elbow macaroni according to package directions, being careful not to overcook the pasta. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the half and half and heat, but do not allow the mixture to boil.

Pour the sauce into a 10 X 13 casserole dish. Add the cooked macaroni, Swiss cheese, parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until everything is well combined. Sprinkle paprika on the top of the casserole. Bake for 30 minutes, or until heated through.

Recipe Variation: If desired, sprinkle additional Swiss and parmesan cheese on the top of the casserole before baking.

Serving Suggestion: This recipe is a perfect accompaniment for ham, fried chicken, meatloaf, and any other recipe that tastes great with a traditional macaroni and cheese recipe.

Take this tasty dish to the next potluck dinner or family get together you attend, and your contribution will be the talk of the event. The guests might look at the concoction a little bit suspiciously at the beginning of the meal, but they'll be asking you for your secret recipe before dessert is served!
